Double Lilies

Double Asiatic flowers are unscented, often pollen free, last well, and are great for picking. The narrow, semi double petals have a gentle frill that adds to the texture. They average 4-8 blooms, with numbers increasing as the bulbs establish, make excellent cut flowers and are so easy to grow. Simply plant, fertilise and enjoy. Leave them in the ground to establish and they will bring you years of joy. Choose a humus rich, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location with afternoon shade in warmer climates. Keep them moist while in growth and fertilise at the start of the season, and again as the flowers are finishing. Mulching over the summer will help maintain moisture levels in the soil.

Double Oriental Lilies are quickly gaining popularity and it's easy to see why! With the showy second row of petals replacing the stamens, the blooms last longer because they are not focusing on seed production and have a more subtle fragrance. The flowers can reach 25 cm in size and their long-lasting blooms make a wonderful cut flower. When planted in groups, their fragrance will fill the garden. Plant them in full sun or partial shade, about 30 cm apart in a rather heavy soil with an ample supply of humus and good drainage. Remove faded flowers and do not cut back stems until autumn. Bulbs should not be lifted but left in the soil to bloom annually for many years.
